For a long time there was a local "dating" service ad (looked like a phone sex service to me) that they advertised ALL THE TIME late at night. The worst of the worst, the bleach blonde with everything nipped & tucked & implanted.... along with the typical porno-theme music. I'm so glad they took those off!

Overheard on "Hanna Montana":

"I can't believe you're doing all this for a girl who hasn't even kissed you yet."

Marched myself out there and 'lectured' the kids on how inappropriate that perspective was on relationships. Told the girls they don't owe any boy anything and if he thinks or acts like they do he doesn't REALLY care about them and is just manipulating them. And told the boys, you are polite and kind to others because that's who you are, not because you WANT something from them.

ARGH! Disney sucks.

Its not just Disney. The Nickelodeon networks have many shows like this.

iCarly is a show about a show. These two girls have a webcast show and they are obsessed with popularity, attention, are always screaming, etc.

The New Beat Band (or something like that) is about 4 boys who want to start a band, so they leave a midwestern state for Hollywood, at least I think that's the story. Effectively it is a male version of iCarly where the boys are obsessed with girls, fame and doing whatever they want.

There is a new show set at a British School, or at least the lead character is British. This too seems to be another show obsessed with relationships, being "in love," etc. Not sure how much will be in there about actually studying and such though.

I've watched a little of the first two shows, maybe 10 or 15 minutes which was more than I could stand. Haven't watched the latter.

One odd thing though. These shows are aimed at young teens and up. Their emphasis is on social things, popularity and relationships and all that. However, the children's cartoons are different.

My Life as a Teenage Robot. Follows a robot superhero designed as a teenage girl as she tries to learn about humans. She is obsessed with popularity and fitting in, but most of the time her plans fail and popularity is portrayed as being not very important compared to having real friends and doing what is right.

Rather than list others, for the most part, the children's cartoons are about heroes fighting the good fight, learning good lessons about life, although there is a bit of PC in them more in some that others (Danny Phantom very high Teenage Robot not so much).

Funny how the kiddie shows are somewhat noble but the teen ones are banal and consumeristic. Maybe it is as Ayn Rand said: children can see through all that nonsense because they still have a sense of fair play, even trade, etc. (well most of them do, I knew some kids who were real swine).

This isn't exactly pornification, but it still amazes me a bit that during the day on a weekend, we can hear TV adverts which tell us, "if you have an erection lasting more than 4 hours, call your doctor".

Part of me is pleased that such things can now be discussed in a matter of fact way, and since I've already had various birds-and-bees discussions with my youngest (12), I don't mind answering questions if they are asked.

Another part of me wonders what my grandfather would have said if he heard a thing like that on TV. He'd probably shake his head and say something disapproving, but then later laugh about it when my grandmother wasn't around...

They haven't been such questions, yet. But for this one, I think my answer might be:

"Well, if blood goes in there and can't come back out, it might stop working for good, or even fall off"

And hopefully that should help scare him off from this sort of thing for a little longer...

What most people don't realize when they are questing for chemically induced four hour erections is that whatever the chemicals are doing to your penis is also doing to your whole body, heart, brain, spleen. Not worth it IMO. There are many reasons why these problems happen. Most of them can be fixed with time, lifestyle changes and hard work. There's that dirty word that people don't like. I think the chemical instant fixes, instant gratification is going to leave you MORE damaged than if you did the hard work and changes which sort things out naturally and in a wholesome manner.
...........

On another note, the one that I originally came in here for is, well someone has pornified my beloved Avatar movie. I won't even post it, but found on Ebaums world while searching for Avatar related materials. It just really pissed me off. Why why why?

Some of the sites I visit for military and news videos and such have long had ads for "adult" sites. For a while they have also been showing animate ads, mostly of supposed members. Some of the girls' ads have them sticking their junk right up in the camera and throwing it around. Others just flop it all out. Either way, it is just sad. Its not sexy or ever interesting, just sad. Really its enough to make you LOSE interest in sex and not go running to the site.

A pornographic magazine for the blind has been launched - complete with explicit text and raised pictures of naked men and women.

Good thing they can't actually see it: that face would give them nightmares. Its like a mishapen boogeyman. It also looks like the main character from the movie "Franklyn."

Second thought: What about those people with hand fetishes or oral fixations?

Third thought: I hope they scotch guard those things.

For the last couple of day, the Nickelodeon Networks have been airing ads for a marathon of shows coming up soon. Yes, I watch those channels for Spongebob and Invader Zim, and Ren and Stimpy if I'm up late on the right nights.

The shows all have the same storyline: serious kisses. Now, these are all in their live action shows, of which they have several now. The common themes in all of these shows are: fame, attention, total chaos, no or few adults, romantic relationships and fighting over the choicer moresels while belittling and abusing those who don't make the cut. Girls are smart and neurotic and boys are stupid or studly.

Normally I mute the commercials, but usually don't get that done right away. One of the commercials has a girl probably 15 or 16 (plus or minus) shouting at the camera "he's HOT!" The rest follows along the same lines, mostly the female lead characters fighting over some "hunk."

Now, what kind of message does this send to the kids? When I was that age, TV still showed boys and girls at either the "Icky" stage still or fumbling but sincere leve. Today, they are agressive, brassy, and "just do it!"

Granted I haven't watched the shows for any length of time. I have seen the ads for them and watched enough to get what they are about. Mostly though they are so banal they make me ill. Ren and Stimpy seem paragons of decorum by comparison.

Tis a sad world when Ren and Stimpy becomes the bastion of intellect and maturity.

As for the portrayal of people in shows, I think back to some of the live action shows of my time. Methinks I'm amongst the youngest on this board, so I probably have a good view of the shows in-between.

Some of the more popular shows in my youth of the live action variety were Saved By The Bell and Boy Meets World. The former definitely had the high-school stereotypes going on, with the obligatory hunk and the like, but in the end everyone still loved both Screech (the nerd) and Slater (the hunk). The latter, towards the end things did get fairly hot and heavy between Cory and Topanga, but the show ran for seven seasons, starting in the 6th grade (where things were farily innocent) and running to college, where Cory and Topanga actually do get married. So there, the show grew up with the cast, which was kind of cool. Do shows even do that anymore?

In any case, some of these relationship issues and stereotypes were brought up, but were seldom the sole focus of the show, moreso side items.

I've seen the links to the animated "Avatar" porn clip. Never watched it because that's just gross. I'm not really surprised that porn companies are applying advancing technology to their garbage. Maybe instead of taxing pot and all that, government should tax porn more heavily.

Porn is often a driver of technology. Contrary to what the article says, 3D porn is not new. And seeing as spoofing major films into porn is fairly common (and actually often quite entertaining if you skip the sex scenes), this comes as no surprise.

And as for taxing porn, the problem there, at this point, comes down to the massive free porn market. Many of the major studios are hurting due to the massive market.
